These regions are described in HTAP2_region_definition_document_v4a.docx, available at http://iek8wikis.iek.fz-juelich.de/HTAPWiki/WP2.1. Here one can also find gridded 0.1 degree netcdf data files with region masks. For the extraction of HTAP region codes, the station lon and lat information is simply mapped to the nearest grid location and the corresponding value in the netcdf file is returned. Note that HTAP in tier 1 defines only one region code for all ocean regions.
