This seems to stop just before the make distcheck uninstall completes. I can't identify the actual error -- make check tests completed.

The gitlab UI says 'There has been a timeout failure or the job got stuck. Check your timeout limits or try again' @badwaik1 What is the gitlab-runner wide timelimit? This job died after 92 minutes. Very long for a reasonable run indeed. Maybe it's simply a timeout (due to slow NFS on sage maybe)? In that case we should increase time limit.

Minor issue: the release version is missing on tar files, so something is wrong with the CI git checkout.
